The “Freedom Song” is an English hymn written by New Jersey-based Nigerian-American imam Adeyinka Muhammad Mendes. It joyously encourages believers to polish their souls by repeating the central formula of Islam, lā ilāha illaLlāh. The poem also recalls the great heroes and heroines of faith throughout time, Prophets and Companions who lived the sacred formula. The hymn is set to the same metre as the well-known Arabic tahlīl “Karrir Ayyuha l-Insān” (some lines are direct translations). The Freedom Song can be sung in many different tunes, and is a great upbeat way to increase one’s remembrance of Allah.
Lyrics
– verse 1 –
It’s the polish of your soul,
By it our lives become whole,
It’s our start and it’s our goal:
Laa ilaaha illaLlaah!
– verse 2 –
By it faith is made concrete,
By it you become complete.
Mankind, be sure to repeat:
Laa ilaaha illallaah.
