Alvarlı Efe

Bayram O Bayram Ola

Erzurum ulu camii

The Great Mosque (Ulu Camii) of Erzurum.

Bayram O Bayram Ola, also known by its opening line Can Bula Cananını, is a Turkish devotional poem (ilahi) by Alvarlı Muhammed Lütfî Efendi (1868–1956), a beloved Naqshbandi Sufi master, scholar, and imam from eastern Anatolia. The poem is a supplication for a true and blessed Eid—one marked not only by outward festivity, but by inner transformation, divine forgiveness, and nearness to God. With each stanza, the poet prays that the soul might find its Beloved and the servant his Lord, culminating in the refrain “Bayrâm o bayrâm ola” (“May this be such an Eid”). The poem is widely recited in Turkey today, especially around Eid (Bayram), and remains a cherished expression of spiritual longing and joy. The refrain is sometimes rendered “Bayram o bayram olur (instead of ola)” in modern Turkish. Many renditions begin with verse 3, and the ilahi is thus sometimes known as Mevlâ Bizi Afv Ede.

Lyrics

– verse 1 –

Cân bula cânânını
Bayrâm o bayrâm ola
Kul bula sultânını
Bayrâm o bayrâm ola

May the soul find its Beloved—
May this be such an Eid.
May the servant find his Sultan—
May this be such an Eid.

– verse 2 –

Hüzn ü keder def’ ola
Dilde hicâb ref’ ola
Cümle günâh af ola
Bayrâm o bayrâm ola

May sorrow and grief be cast away,
May the veils from the heart be lifted,
May every sin be forgiven—
May this be such an Eid.
