Abdul Sattar Niazi

Ham Faqīroñ ko Madīne kī Galī Achhī Lagī

Street beneath the Gate of Peace (Bāb al-Salām), the southwestern gate to the Prophet's mosque, 1916.

Ham Faqīroñ ko Madīne kī Galī Achhī Lagī (ہم فقیروں کو مدینے کی گلی اچھی لگی), “We Paupers the Streets of Medina Adore”, is a popular Urdu na‘at by the Pakistani poet and na‘at-khawan Abdul Sattar Niazi. As the titular refrain indicates, the poem expresses love and longing for being in the Prophet’s company in Medina. The poet laments over how empty and dull life is away from the Prophet’s presence and rejoices at how visiting Medina as well as hearing the praise of the Prophet ﷺ brings life and joy to the heart. The poem is sometimes known by its opening line, “Khusravī Achhī Lagī na Sarvarī Achhī Lagī” (خسروی اچھی لگی نہ سروری اچھی لگی ).
