Qad Kafānī ‘Ilmu Rabbī (قد كفاني علم ربي), “My Lord’s Knowledge Suffices Me”, is a deeply moving qasida by the 18th-century saint and sage Imam ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Alawī al-Ḥaddād of Tarim, Hadhramaut. In the opening verses, the poet expresses the utter dependence and neediness of the servant before his All-Knowing, All-Powerful Lord. The poem then unfolds as a heartfelt prayer—an intimate dialogue in which the humble supplicant confesses his spiritual state, seeks divine mercy and kindness, and yearns for the inner peace and joy that come from nearness to God. The poem is popularly sung with the chorus shown below, although sometimes the first verse is simply used as a refrain.
Lyrics
– chorus –
Allaah Allaah, Allaah Allaah,
maa lanaa mawlan siwa Llaah
Kullamaa naadaytu yaa Hoo
qaala yaa ‘abdee Ana Llaah
Allah Allah, Allah, Allah –
there is no lord for us besides Allah
Every time I call out to Him,
He responds “O my slave, I am Allah”
– verse 1 / refrain –
قَدْ كَفَانِي عِلْمُ رَبِّي
مِنْ سُؤَالِي وَاخْتِيَارْي
فَدُعَائِي وَابْتِهَالِي
شَاهِدٌ لِي بِافْتِقَارِي
Qad kafaanee ‘ilmu Rabbee
min su’aalee wakhtiyaaree
Fa du‘aa’ee wabtihaalee
shaahidun lee biftiqaaree
My Lord’s knowledge suffices me
from asking or choosing.
My prayer and my pleading
bear witness to my neediness.
