Zulfiqar Ahmad

Merā Dil Badal De

A man raises his hands in supplication at a mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan. (Anjum Naveed)

Merā Dil Badal De (میرا دل بدل دے), “Turn My Heart”, is an Urdu poeem written by the contemporary Pakistani shaykh Pir Zulfiqar Ahmad Naqshbandi, and popularised by the rockstar-turned-nasheed-artist Junaid Jamshed. Based on the Prophetic invocation, “O Turner of Hearts, make my heart firm upon your religion” (Yā Muqallib al-qulūb thabbit qalbī ‘alā dīnik), it takes the form of a penitent prayer to Allah, asking Him to alter the state of one’s heart from heedlessness to a life of devotion, constant remembrance, and intoxication in the love of God.

Lyrics

میرا غفلت میں ڈوبا دل بدل دے

Meraa ghaflat meiñ ḋooba dil badal de

Turn this heart of mine steeped in heedlessness.

میرا غفلت میں ڈوبا دل بدل دے
ہوا و حرص والا دل بدل دے

Meraa ghaflat meiñ ḋooba dil badal de
Hawaa o hirs waalaa dil badal de

Turn this heart of mine steeped in heedlessness.
Turn this heart full of desire and greed.
